A plant with two Mitsubishi 501G turbines contacted a trusted Groome partner with the request to inspect the boiler tubes that were experiencing plugging and causing increased dP. The partner recommended that the client meet with Groome to find cost-effective, sustainable solutions to the unit disruption.
The Groome team made a trip to the plant during an outage to meet with the client and inspect the catalyst. It was determined that the equipment malfunction was severe and required customized maintenance solutions and HRSG cleaning expertise.
Upon the further inspection inside the HRSG and discussion with the customer, it was determined that there was severe plugging of the fin tubes on the LP section – to the point that the fins were crumbling due to a high amount of rust plugging. Proposals from other contractors offered the client extremely intrusive options that could compromise the already-fragile equipment. Groome listened to the customer’s concerns and opinions, and provided a solution on how to clean the catalyst and the tubes effectively without further damage and degradation.
Groome was able to liberate all plugging and improve dP dramatically, all without jeopardizing the integrity of the fin tubes. Groome saved the customer the high expense of hiring a specialty contractor whose sole purpose is boiler tube replacement; Groome also enabled the customer to run more efficiently once the work was complete. The plant saved 10s of thousands of dollars by utilizing the Groome method.
